Findings of last weekend

Postby Sebastian Holzki » Mon Sep 13, 2010 8:08 pm

Hello.

On Saturday I went early in the morning with my brother in the Heather near our house.
We walked around a pond and the grass was wet by the morning dew.
We found not much but than I saw a Triturus cristatus on a culm in a hight of around 30 cm.

In the afternoon we drove to a lake. There we saw a few grass snakes but I photographed no one.
In a shrub of blackberries I found a young Hyla.

In the next morning we were again at the lake and I found again a Triturus cristatus in a hight of around 40 cm.

In the afternoon in the pond of our garden were swimming three Natrix. Here are a few pictures.

I was also very surprised about that.

Nice finds; now I know why I hardly ever find newts under rocks and logs; they are in the bushes!

The question is, why do they climb? Did you observe any other relative behavior?

No, I observed no other relative behavior. They were only sitting or hanging on the plants.
It was early in the morning and wet. They didn´t try to run away.

We were coming back to the first newt an hour later but then he was gone away.

I thought it was an exception when I saw the first newt but when I have seen it again on next day in another place I was very surprised and I thought it is normal.

Very interesting and strange. I'd spend some more mornings trying to find why do they do this :-)
