Bufo viridis and something ugly..

Postby GertJan Verspui » Sun May 22, 2011 2:07 pm

Yesterday I drove to Germany to finally see the Green toad.

I missed this species lots of times and only saw one once when my camera was not with me, so the distance of 500km was ok...

I planned to look in the afternoon and stay untill the night, because I wanted to hear them as well, but I was lucky and found 10 of them in a short time and there was one male calling in the afternoon.

2 weeks earlier I went to the aways lovely Belgium to see the Bull frog, I saw many subadults, only one of them could not escape...

I`m allways happy to see Green Toads! The Bullfrog is an interesting find if you ask me, but i need to go and read some papers on the amount of trouble it can cause.
Is it like the european version of the Cane Toad problem ?

GertJan,

Great toad pics :D

Is the bullfrog population a stable one? They are usually terminated without prejudice if seen in the UK. I know there are populations in Italy but did not know of Belgium? What part of Belgium are they located in?

Kind regards

Paul

Thanks guys,

What I've read somewhere is that there is still a program for terminating them, I dont know any details on that, but I only saw subadults, I did not catch any tadpoles.
The Location is about 15 min. south of the dutch city Breda in De Mosten.

That particular place in the community Hoogstraten is indeed subject of some eradication attempts, in a project trying to establish what the best way is to get rid of the species. The main bullfrog infestation in Belgium is, however, the valley of the Grote Nete river, an area full with fish ponds etc. more or less in between Meerhout, Westerlo, Olmen and Balen, including a nature reserve in Zammel.

I believe in the UK, hollow-tipped bullets proved to be the best way...
