Possessed by aspis (Again!!!)

Postby Jürgen Gebhart » Mon Jul 04, 2011 4:42 pm

Take a few Days off-work, because I have a lot of things to do at Home before I go with my wife to our summer vacation (No fieldherping, hurray!!)
Sunday evening I told my wife that I go on Monday for a fast Trip to Tessin/Ticino to picture some Aspvipers (I`m Vipera aspis addicted). She was not much surprised! I promised that I to all the things on the to-do list on Tuesday.
I arrived on Monday morning a little bit too early, most of the stonewalls were still in the shadow of the mountains, so I decided to go deeper in the Valley. I came across this nice area, maybe not good for aspis but possible for berus I thought.

I hike more than one and half hour around but found only one Rana temporaria.
I stopped that and turn around. At the end of the area I saw a thin metal thing.

lift it up and found a berus.

After some pics I went back to the stonewalls, pictured a few Lacerta bilineata in Shadow

But found no aspis. I`m ready with this Tessin-thing, I will never came back this year, maybe never again, maybe next spring.

Still nice photo's Jürgen! I always thrilled by finding a berus!

I'm currently still V. berus addicted but I'm most likely to develop a V. aspis addiction quite soon  . I'm going to Switzerland in August (Blatten, Wallis). I'm hoping to find them there.

Don't give your hopes up just yet. I've heard some amazing stories from people who went there! (Problem is that I've only heard them, not lived one ;) )

Is V. berus only found on the lower altitudes? I know V. aspis doensn't like high altitudes but how high up van V. berus be found?

Best Regards,

Tim

The Aspis-Junkie was in the field again. This time in the Bernese Alps, this is the right place for a Fieldherping Dummy like me!
Found two nice banded ones.

Sadly no black one this time, but on the way out of the valley I saw that other people found a black one, in the hard way.

Pain and Anger

That first Bernese aspis is the most famous aspis in the world, I think. Check some books and websites and you will see that the pattern of this specimen pops up often. I also had the privilege of meeting the beauty.

That first asp has three rows of small scales between the eye and the labials! Is that normal?

Fast evolution :!: This individual is on his way be become a Macrovipera

Tom, no, thats not normal, but may happen from time to time.
Here in my lowland Vipera berus population I also have a few specimens with 2 rows suboculars, 1 row would be expected.
