At last! First few snakes out basking today.. a great sight :D I spent a happy hour just sitting a few feet away from the hibernaculum, watching the six berus changing position and enjoying the sun.. field days dont get much better than that :D

Breaking news from the "Balkan" corner as well: The first Vipera berus bosniensis (or, as one should say nowadays,
from the Balkan clade) have been seen today, at our monitoring site in the vicinity of Zagreb. Two black males,
of course, they are always the first to appear, at least here.

The lucky winner was, alas (!), not me, but my friend Ivo Peranić, who has the privilege to live amidst the habitat,
some 2.5 kilometers from the "hotspot" (or, in other words, the "poor" guy does not live in the centre of Zagreb,
as you like it...)
Regarding the ""Balkan" corner", Zagreb officially (geographically) belongs to Central Europe (it lies north of the northern
border of the Balkan peninsula - as defined by geographers), but we are not in the least offended by being ascribed to
that region, especially if it's meant in the biological sense.
