Vipera berus activity 2012

Postby André Van Hecke » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:55 pm

I like to inform this forum that I observed the first Vipera berus activity in the province of Antwerp (Belgium) on 22 february.
Special to mention: it was the same male that was also observed as the first one in 2011 en now also at the same hibernaculum-place!

I had my first males of the year today, although it took me a lot longer than usual to find them. No matter what I do I cannot seem to get the file size small enough to post the photos on here using photoshop etc :-( so for now here are some photos: http://mwilsonherps.wordpress.com/2012/ ... ss-begins/

What species of deer is that, roe deer? It looks a bit like a Chinese water deer with that relatively short neck and broad, rounded ears... But well done lad!

Looks like a female Roe Deer, I think you can see an obvious white rump patch through the trees and obvious black edges on the ears. Going up there with Matt tomorrow so hopefully they will still be around (along with a few Adders of course).

The result of todays outing with Matt Wilson was just one brave soul who came out after a break in the clouds for 30 mins on a cool breezy day and was the same one Matt had yesterday.

Back to my side of the Pennines today and 5 Adders were out including an old friend, a blueish male in his usual spot, also 1 Zootoca which I think is my earliest to date.
