Grassnakes (Natrix natrix)

Postby Andre Schmid » Sat Aug 01, 2009 10:43 am

Hi guys,
I´ve near my hometown some little lakes and there live a lot of Natix natrix. I´ve found on some trips about 30 or 40 grassnakes all kind (babys, subadults and adults). Thats the perfect habitat for the snakes, there s a lot of frogs and little fishes....a lot to eat

Here are some shoots I´ve taken from the place and the snakes.

Thats one of 4 little lakes, but at this lake i found the most snakes

Hello Andre,

I´m woundering, which subspecies of the Grass snakes occur in your area?
On the pics, they look like nominate race.

Sidenote:
When you "place inline" your pics, the border doesnt look like a postal stamp and there is not a white frame around, if some pics are smaller than others.
Just put the cursor in your posting on that place, you want to show an image and click "place inline" below the picture (attachment) you want to show there.
The order might be different from uploading order.

I´ve done it in your posting now with the first image.
In your posting (edit window) it will look like this:

Code: Select all
Here are some shoots I´ve taken from the place and the snakes.

Also, if you type in some text at the attachment (image) description, this text will be shown in grey italics below the image, when you place it inline!

Thanks, now it shows better.

And yes its the nominat form of Natrix (Natrix natrix natrix).I believe that only on the very south habitats in germany to french the helvetica subspecies live and here in south germany, about 150 km to france only the natrix form.

Hi Andre,
impressive shots. I grew up in the northern black forest but that time I was rather ignorant, so I neither noticed any grass snakes nor any viperas - what a shame ;) .
