Last Salamandra trip of the year

Postby Paul Bachhausen » Sat Oct 18, 2014 7:09 pm

Last night we made our last "Salamanderwanderung" of this year, Remscheid, near Solingen-Burg.
Right time, right place - app. 80 Salamanders.

Interesting to see you also get animals with these reddish parotoid glands.
Don't stop too soon ;)

I saw one with a touch of brown near the River Ourthe last week as well. What's the deal with it?

Not with your Bunderbos shoes, I hope. ;)

It's very rare in my population and probably also fades with age. Not much to tell otherwise.

Well, in order to give the Bunderbos genetics a fighting chance I released some animals at that spot in Belgium.

On a side note, it had rained there all week and even during the day when I was there and the beech dominated forest was wet with temps around 10°C. I only found about 20 animals in about 2 hours.

I visit different Population since many years. In all this reddish parotoid glands are rare!

Not the end of my personal observation, only of the program "Salamanderwanderung".
Not in the Population Solingen/Remscheid, but in two other populations (Ratingen and Mülheim) I found my last Salamandra in December and my first in January.

But the next meeting of our group "Salamanderwanderung" will be a fieldherping Konferenz:

Local abundance varies a great deal naturally.

Same here. If anything, low activity seems here more marked in (early) summer than in mild winters. The winter drop usually comes with the colder temps towards later in January and February.
