Season's End

Postby Kristian Munkholm » Tue Oct 27, 2015 10:51 am

We had a spring thread.

We had a summer thread.

A late season thread complete with the full palette of autumn colours must be already long overdue. I don't have much but that won't stop me from starting this to enjoy all that the rest of you have on offer ;)

I went out yesterday for the first time since mid September (apart from my little jaunt to Spain). Seeing as I'd been holed up inside for so long just enjoying the light, colours and fresh air was plenty, any critters were pure icing.

It's late in the season, it was a bit chilly and predictably, I didn't see much. I missed the adders but did manage a couple of juvie sand lizards moving slowly about in the grass at a railroad embankment. Next to them I found a small smooth newt sitting atop a pebble under a tiny scrap of rubber.

Eventually I had to return after three nice, even if unproductive, hours afield. I had given up hope of finding any more when on my way back home, on the outskirts of town, out of the corner of my eye I noticed something by the roadside.

Not the adder I had been hoping for but still a decent end to the season.

My season ended a few days ago when I found this sleeping beauty in the Peloponnese.

Beautiful colours...! I've seen how pretty this species can be from Benny Trapp's pictures, but haven't witnessed it myself.
