Lower Saxony Spring 2016

Postby Tim Lueddecke » Wed Jun 22, 2016 7:55 am

Hi Guys,
so this will be my first topic in this forum. Hopefully everything is fine with my attached pictures and so on. I am not so fit in using forums and all this stuff :?

Since march I was out in the field around my hometown on different herping trips. I would like to show you what I found so far during this year, hopefully you enjoy it.
All animals were found in Lower Saxony, mostly in the Harz, Braunschweig and Hannover area. I will update this Thread from time to time, to share some new stuff with you 8-)

lets start with my favourite herp: Vipera berus male in the Harz

Zootoca vivipara (here a female) can be found nearly everywhere in LS

teichfroschgranetalsperre20160501.JPG
and also Rana temporaria are very common here, this guy also is from the Harz area

Bufobufoparotids20160512granetalsperre.JPG
and the European common Toad (Bufo bufo) is also commonly seen

Now we are leaving the Harz area, the next pictures were taken in the more flatted landscapes (Vorharz)...
Hylaarborea5_20160519.JPG
in some areas north of the Harz, it is possible to find Hyla arborea (especially during night herping actions)

TrituruscristatusHand.JPG
You can find Triturus cristatus in some ponds, this little friend doesnt look too fit after all...

Ichthyosauraalpestris_Kleiwiesen_20160518.JPG
in the same pond: Stunning Ichtyosaura alpestris

Triturusvulgaris_Kleiwiesen2_20160518.JPG
and also Lissotriton vulgaris

Triturusvulgaris_Kleiwiesn3_20160518.JPG
and again Lissotriton vulgaris, as you can see: Some cool newts in this area!

Pelophylax_Kleiwiesen1_20160518.JPG
where the newts are, Pelophylax is always close

Moorfrosch_Gifhorn2_20160519.JPG
a few Km away from the "newt ponds" is a strong population of Rana arvalis

BlaueJungfer_Kleiwisen2_20160518.JPG
not a herp, but still cool: Big Dragonflys in blue

Großlibelle_Kleiwiesen1_20160518.JPG
and even bigger ones in brown...

one last spot for this post so far, an old stone pit near Hannover with amazing amphibians:

Epidalea calamita

taking a closer look on it :)

and finally: Bombina variegata! (very rare in germany)

Bombina variegata accidently turned itself upside down, while going into defensive posture XD

Welcome, Tim! Hope to a lot hear more of your endeavours, regardless of the derailment talents of some. ;)
