Austria August 2016

Postby Steven Zwartkruis » Sun Sep 11, 2016 2:58 pm

This summer I spent two weeks in the eastern part of the alps. Having the house we rented at an altitude of 2000m resulted in experiencing all kinds of weather form sun and 24 degrees Celsius to snow.

Sadly most snow did melt already when I took this picture, but for a few hours we experienced a winter landscape.

Small drinking pond at an altitude of 2000m in which dozens of alpine newt Ichthyosaura alpestris were found.

Male alpine newt.

Lots of Zootica vivipara were seen on the eastern slopes at 1800-2000m altitude.

Around 1400m altitude Salamandra atra were found, here a close up of a male.

In the valley at 600m altitude this Bombina variegata was found.

Sadly I didn't see Salamandra salamandra or Triturus carnifex. One viper was seen but I didn't manage to shoot a nice picture.

Maybe, depends on the area you have been? ;)
But nice shots of all the species you have found!

Thanks Mario,

To find S. salamandra and T. carnifex I went to some places in the vicinity of Villach, but I already didn't expect to find much as temperatures down there had been around 25 degrees Celsius for some days.
