IBM peat bog

Postby Mario Schweiger » Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:32 pm

This morning I´ve been to "my" peat bog near the village Ibm, Upper Austria, again.
The morning started with moderate temperatures (19°C) and about 80% cloud coverage. Seemed to be good for vipers.
And indeed
After approx. 15 minutes I spotted the first one. A nice (not gravid) female of about 55 cm.

Its crazy, but all vipers in this population are crazy vipers. I havn´t seen one in all the years which has been a bit calm. All try to bite from approx. 30 to 50 cms. and allways turn their head against the "enemy"
A young one from last year run into the dense Erica/Calluna bushes - gone!

At 11:00 a.m. the weather gots more sunny and maybe to warm for vipers now. So I walked along the nature trail and spotted some Zootoca vivipara. Although tourist walked along every 10 to 15 minutes, the lizards came back to the trail very soon. Many of them just climbed across the edge of the boards. If I dont see you - you dont see me!

Nice pics Mario, when you move around in the peat bog, are there paths you can walk on (looked like that on some pics with the zootoca), is it very wet?
Or maybe its dry enough to walk around with just boots?

Yes, there is a trail through the bog. The have built it new in late last winter. See this pic from Febr. 28th, 2010

Its a Natura 2000 reserve. So its not allowed to leave the trail without permission.
But 90% of the berus are on the edge of the bog. Its to wet inside the bog and the live on the drier, Erica/Calluna overgrown areas.
