Herping in August - Germany

Postby Sandra Panienka » Sat Aug 06, 2011 8:44 pm

I went on a few short trips - or actually let's call them walks - in my area on Thursday and Friday. It was quite humid on both days, although it started to heat up a bit on Thursday when the sun came out in the afternoon, and especially on Friday it was disgustingly humid. Well ... enjoy. ;O)

Pics from Thursday:

1. My first find of the day. Always a sad sight.

2. Smooth snake taking a nap.

3. Beautiful Slow worm

5. My first juvenile sand lizard of the year.

After I discovered the sand lizard it got too hot and I went back home.

Friday - morning

On Friday I went back to the same area ...

1. ... and found the same little sand lizard.
Image

2. ... and another dead Slow worm. During the last four days I've found four dead ones. When people ride their bikes, they're just not looking.

Friday - noon
After discovering my first sand lizard I decided to do some mapping for a field report and went to have a look in another area close to where I live to search for juvenile sand lizards and wall lizards. I was successful with both species. Although I only found about two juvenile wall lizards that must have been a couple of weeks older compared to the sand lizards.
So here are some sand lizards, wall lizards and a yellow-bellied toad.

14. Also found a dead grass snake. Haven't seen one in a while, so sad to only find a dead one.

Friday afternoon
I could go herping all day long. ;O) So, I was curious about our invasive wall lizards and went to see if they also reproduced. They share their habitat with sand lizards, too. Both species reproduced successfully this year. Found about 10 juveniles from each species and I assume there were many more.

Sad thing with the slow worms. Two days ago I found a pice of a slow worm, sacrifce of grass cutting.
the pics of the alive slow worms are great!!
It looks like you have two different supspecies of muralis in your area, nigriventris and maculiventris.

Dear Sandra,

I am currently working on the effects of invasive wall lizards towards native sand lizards. We are monitoring a population in Nürtingen, where P. m. maculiventris-West has been introduced into a sand lizard habitat. This habitat looks pretty much the same like yours. Could you please tell me the locality of the population you have pictured? And do you know how long both species live together in the same habitat?

Best wishes, Ulli

Thanks for the nice comments!

@ Ulrich: I wrote you a pm with exact locations.

@Jürgen: I'm not very good with the maculiventris subspecies but I would really love to learn how to distinguish the different subspecies. Could you point out which lizards resemble maculiventris and why?

yes, in some populations in the native range both species get in contact, but I think it is no real strict syntopy. When P. muralis gets introduced into sand lizard habitats the problem is that syntopy is often enforced within an (atypical muralis) habitat with limited resources.
