Herping in Vaud (Switzerland)

Postby Bastien Comment » Mon Aug 08, 2011 6:26 pm

This Sunday, I've been to one of our best spots in state Vaud in Switzerland with my friend Yannick to search for Vipera aspis and Hierophis viridflavus. It had rained in the morning and the afternoon was rather sunny with clouds here and there and a temperature between 21 and 23 degrees when we were there at around 4 pm. We've found 5 asp vipers plus 2 escaping too fast for a picture and a Hierophis viridiflavus! So we were quite happy with this day ;-)

In my opinion, the most beautiful specimen found that day. A dark brown female (and a gravid one by the way) with black lines that almost look blue!

And finally, the 5th viper!

On this picture, you can see well that this viper has a scarf on the back.

And to finish the day, the Hierophis viridiflavus!

It was a pretty big specimen, probably close to 1.50 m.

The day before, Yannick had already gone to another place not far away (I was working on Saturday...) and he made nice pictures of this very clear asp viper.

All these asps are great!
I have to visit them in next spring - not only and the every year "atra" in Berner Oberland.

Excellent photo's. What bright colours on those vipers. Three weeks ago I was in Switzerland (Lugano and Grindelwald) but although my daily efforts I saw no vipers

Really enjoyed the photo's!

Best regards,

Tim

Thanks for your feedbacks guys. To be honest, I hadn't been so lucky for quite long now and July has been simply awful (only saw a few Tesselata at my lake spot but no vipers). Usually, I see between one and three snakes when I go fieldherping there, much less than when I was a kid...

On the first male picture I thought, oh there are two individuals together!
But on the second one there is the orange-brown male with the silvergrey head -- great! :o
