Last friday I visited the population that Bert monitors. About 7 to 8 degrees Celcius and continous rain.. But we ended with a number somewhere around the 280 Salamandra's

Thanks for having me Bert!

Congrats on the lifer Sjuul! ;)

Indeed stunning colours but very weird for Salamandra terrestris terrestris. Has there been DNA research in that area? They give me a strong fastuosa vibe

With all the best,

Tim

Dont think fastuosa - there are few other terrestris populations with some high yellow spezies.
But this seem realy strong.
Would like to see it

It's not so rare to spot some yellow individuals in Salamandra terrestris terrestris populations.
And it will be hard to explain the repartition and evolutive story of fastuosa with a population in the Netherlands ...

Nice, Sjuul. I don't mean to annoy, but please don't tell others about this place. There's only few fire salamander populations in Flanders and only very few with such healthy numbers. In the context of the new chytrid disease, the last thing we need is too many wildlife enthusiasts cruising our tiny fragments of old woodland. So, sorry to be annoying, but this had to be said.

About the high-yellow morph, we've already discussed this before. Bert and even I myself posted plenty of these before, include some with an even higher pigmentation level.

In the mean time, autumn is still great. Yesterday 152 manders.

Things are slightly slowing down for a while on the salamander front around here. October brought a decent 559 sightings over 4 visits, while November slowed down with 306 in 5 visits. Has been cold and windy for a couple of days, but if I'm feeling not as sick as today by then, Friday's looking very promising for a first December hit. Maybe I'll reach a 7500 alltime total by the end of the year

How good or bad is amphibian life elsewhere? Any recent fire salamander outings by anyone else?

Hello all,

I found a DOR fire salamender two days ago on a mountain road (alt.450m) in "Vosges" just 20kms from home. The weather was wet and temperatures not so low for the season here (8-10°C). I will try to find some actives this afternoon as i have a little free time after work, and the meteo seems right...will let you know if i find something ;-)
