First outing of the year
Yesterday (2013-03-03) I went to a adder hibernaculum to see if the snakes have emerged. Sure enough I could note my first find of the year. It is a melanistic male, approximately 40 cm in length. When I found him he didn’t try to escape and according to my IR-thermometer his skin was barely 9°C when I found him.

Nice snake. In your area, Magnus, is it usual to see the first of the year around this time?

Daniel, I have only lived here for two yeas and I don't know any hepers around this town. Thus, it's hard for me to say when snakes usually emerge here.

Cheers!
