Dear All,

I am heading out to Finland this weekend for a photographic foray and I hope to include a good bit of herping too..

I was hoping that someone might be able to recommend some sites and species to encounter within 2-3hrs of Kajaani..? I will be heading out to Finland on Sunday 19th and have organised the first 5 days of a 10 day trip, but from the 25th I don't have an itinerary except to explore as much as possible. I will have a hire car but don't want to spend all of my time in it, I'd rather be out on foot and enjoying the wonderful wilderness and wildlife on offer.

Your experience and expertise would be gratefully received and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Brett

(Kent, UK)

Hi! I know a good place near Kajaani with many Rana temporaria, Vipera berus and Zootoca vivipara. Unfortunately I found this forum only a couple of weeks ago. Did you find reptiles or amphibians? There are also records of Natrix natrix in Kajaani, which are one of the most northern in the world for this species. I tried to find Natrix natrix there 2009 with no success.
