Santorini and Ios (Cyclades)

Postby Matt Wilson » Thu Jun 28, 2012 2:22 pm

Hi everyone,
I am visiting Santorini and Ios in the Cyclades at the end of July for a 'normal' holiday and was wondering if anyone can add any further species to the lists I have come up with so far? This is not a herping trip at all, and probably won't have too much time to search but I am curious to know if anything else could be there, I can't personally think of any other likely additions to these lists except one (fallax on Ios) but any further knowledge of the herpetofauna on these small islands would be much appreciated.

Santorini:

Chalcides moseri (??????) Surely not....
Podarcis erhardii
Hemidactylus turcicus
Mediodactylus kotchyi
Elaphe quatuorlineata (slough record from Richard Clark)
Dolichophis caspius (Very doubtful record)
Telescopus fallax pallidus
Zamenis situla

Ios:

Podarcis erhardii
Hemidactylus turcicus
Mediodactylus kotschyi
Elaphe quatuorlineata meurteri
Eryx jaculus (dwarf form)
Vipera ammodytes (dwarf form)

Any further additions would be great, I'd expect Telescopus on Ios as well.

Cheers,

Matt

'normal' holiday
translates to getting pissed and getting end away

This is not a herping trip at all, and probably won't have too much time to search
translates to every spare minute when not doing the above 2 activities will be searching for herps.

You know i'm right Matt

You should ask David Buttle and Tamas Toth. They both keep track of Greek island lists.

I want to say you're wrong, but....

translates to every spare minute when not doing the above 2 activities will be searching for herps.

Problem here is: it will be over 40C and any half productive searches will have to be done at night, the time when I'll be having my 'normal' holiday. Shame it will be so hot during the day as there isn't much to do then.

Jeroen, I already have Dave Buttle's paper on these islands, that's where I got my short list from so far. Don't think there will be anything else on Santorini, in fact I'd imagine the two snake skins could have been errors anyway as they don't quite fit somehow. Doesn't seem to be any literature for Ios :(

That doesn't mean there wouldn't have been any additions, right? It's of course up to you but I'd ask both gentlemen.

Santorini is extremely limited in terms of habitats, lots of development, general volcanic nature etc. So don't think there is anything else there to find. Ios is likely to have more, should have Telescopus owing to it's size and the presence of this species on surrounding islands. But yeah will get in touch with both.
