Mykonos-Naxos-antiparos-Ios-Santorini

Postby Peter Engelen » Tue May 24, 2016 7:51 pm

We had 2 weeks holiday so my girlfriend and I decided to go to Greece. Target for me was Eryx, a snake a never found by myself. And for Anniek, of course the usual quatuorlineata. So we decided to do some island-hopping. We hired a car on Mykonos and we will return it back in Santorini. We did Mykonos, Naxos, 1 hour Paros, Antiparos, Ios and only 1 night Santorini. The weather conditions were just perfect and we found 60 snakes alive. 41 of those were Eryx. 1 basking at daytime, 2 at night (nights were cold, 14-16°C) and all the rest under stones.

Congrats on the Eryx!
60 snakes is an impressive total - which island was your favourite/most productive?

41 of those were Eryx

My favourite snake, which I've never seen in nature. What should I say... words fail me,
I'm just soooo terribly envious...

My favorite island was Ios. But the island where we found the mosted snakes was Naxos (28 pc = 24 Eryx). We couldn't find a Natrix on Naxos and on Mykonos and Antiparos all the Natrix we found were black. Als one very blackisch Elaphe and a very black Vipera.

...and a very black Vipera.

And you mention it just like that, en passant??!! Never mind black or blackish N. natrix,
but a black or "very blackish" V. ammodytes is a FIND ideed, a once-in-a-lifetime find...
The "very blackish Elaphe" is also a FIND, so don't be so modest... Man, you had luck.

The Vipers we found were all less then 30 cm. only on Naxos we found one of 52 cm. The elaphes were between 75 and 175 cm.
