Hard to say but my guess would be combat. When mating the male bites the female very close to the head and also these two both look like males - females' heads are smaller and overall more "gentle" looking.

See these:

I would also say it's a combat.
Here's a mating I observed in Montenegro in 2010. The female had its eyes closed for most of the time. She only opened them from time to time to see if the disturbing observer is still there, I guess.

The thing is that I don't think I've ever heard of male combat in anguids...?

This is also interesting...

Gemonensis for sure!
Unusual picture, but not of an "impossible" event: Pseudopus are not herbivore animals actually... :)

Yes, I always wondered why they never use biting in defense when caught? Surely they can deliver a good bite because of their size and those snail crushing jaws. Anybody ever been bitten by Pseudopus?

Not by a Pseudopus, but once I was bitten by an old Anguis male and I was really surprised by a force of a bite. I believe Pseudopus bite can be really nasty.

Never. They don't do anything at all when caught. Lucky us. On the other hand, the photos of a caught
Pseudopus apodus are really frustrating - they just lie there and look like dead. Even after a photo
session - just have a look at this scene:
