Hello everybody,

in late March, I had the pleasure to enjoy this year's season opening on the Greek islands of Rhodos and Kastellorizo with a team of non-European Salamander enthusiasts.

Here's my report:

Hope you enjoy!

Hi Peter

Once again a nice and entertaining report from you. Good to hear that Trachylepis aurata seems not to be that hard to find in early spring. I will try to find this species myself sooner or later.

Peter, shouldn't you go and find all lilfordi species rather than guiding old Brits?

Nicely done, gentlemen! Gotta love the candy mander!

Less of the old !

It was an extremely enjoyable trip, the density of salamanders was amazing.. a really beautiful species.

Without causing a riot.. someone really needs to get a grip on how herpers define Europe though.. some go by Jeroen's paper, some by jeroen, bobby, wouter and jans book, some on geology , some on accosiation to a European country in the case of islands that geographically and geologically are more akin to non European countries.. birders do the western pealarctic .. what's a boy to do???

Any how, as jeroen pointed out, I'm old now so it can't be long till Alzheimer's kicks in and I can remember what I've seen...

Paul

Good job! You found a lot of interesting species.

I don't want to be a prick but how so? Geographically it is closer to Europe than the islands off the northern coast of Norway and geologically it's mostly limestone (nothing that doesn't occur in Europe) ;)

Sorry I thought we are talking about another group of "non-European" islands

Come on, Paul: Now that you have been on Kastellorizo you can easily define it as a part of Europe.

Kastellorizo is in our book, but not in Europe. Just like the UK...
