Island of Cres Field Trip

Postby Christoffel Bonte » Tue Aug 09, 2011 11:50 pm

Beginning of May we (biology students of the University of Antwerp) went on a 10 day 'Island Ecology' field trip to Cres in Croatia.
It was'nt a real herping trip as we had to do field work for reports, but all in all our group got a nice list.
Well, these are my pictures in line with sighting:

If someone would know any, be sure to identify the insects and plants.. or correct any mistakes..

PS: I could still use some Viper people's help on this:

Pictureless list additions are:

Podarcis sicula
Hierophis viridiflavus
Pseudopus apodus

A beautifull island, certainly worth a second visit which then should be linked with a visit to Krk and some Olm caves..

Nice findings, especially the Coronella, which seems to be very rare (from sightings) on Cres island!
But a Hierophis viridiflavus?
Should - if it was one - a black one (carbonarius morph)?
Your nameless green lizards seems to be a melisselensis too.
Your orchid is Orchis tridentata and the other plant some kind od Aristolochia.

Yes, it was a black one, though i'm not that experienced as a 'herper',
I'm pretty sure it was H. viridiflavus as it was too big (about 1m70) to be a gemonensis (Unless that would be a totally wrong criteria?)
It might not be so crazy to think it swam/drifted/was brought on to the island.
Because others also saw a juvenile Elaphe quatuorlineata on Mali Plavnik; which is definitely too small to hold any snake population.

Regarding Hierophis viridiflavus, in which part of the island did you find it?
(There was one sighting I know of, at the very northern tip of the island...)

The same question applies to Coronella austriaca. As far as I know, there
had been only two finds on Cres, both practically at the same place. Yours
would be the third.

Keep in mind that on Cres you could also find a black specimen of Malpolon, as shown in this article: http://www.podarcis.eu/AS/Bibliografie/BIB_2468.pdf

It could also have been a melanistic specimen of Z.longissimus.
