Tuscany, Italy - Information requested

Postby Frank Paul Fietz » Wed Jun 11, 2014 10:02 pm

Dear Forum,

pretty soon I´ll be going to the Tuscany,- the Garfagnana to be more precise.
I beg for any Information for that area, because I´ve never been there before.

See my trip Report: Lycian Coast !

Thanks in advance,
Frank

I've never been there, but I know other places in Tuscany: Maremma for instance. My brother works in the ecology sector in Siena.

Garfagnana seems to be beautiful and not very hot: http://newtuscanexperience.blogspot.it/ ... ny_26.html

Regarding reptiles I think it would be possible to see H.viridiflavus, N.natrix, Z.longissimus, V.aspis and maybe other species such as Coronella sp.

Garfagnana is probably also a good place for mushrooming...

Your trip report near Antalya is interesting, but it lacks, in my opinion, of some habitat pictures. Where did you find the Zamenis, for instance? I hope to see some more pictures there... :D

more species there:
Speleomantes ambrosii/italicus (probably to dry now, but maybe after thunderstorm)
Salamandra salamandra (probably to dry now, but maybe after thunderstorm)
Ichthyosaura a. apuanus (many individuals the whole year in deeper water, like ponds in old querries)
Triturus carnifex (but never seen there)
giant Bufo bufo
Bufotes balearicus
Bombina v. pachypus
Podarcis muralis nigriventris (very nice colored specimens)
Lacerta bilineata
Anguis veronensis

I'm sure I forgot some ;)

So I can just say that tuscany is a great place for herping and if you know how a habitat has to look for herps you will find them there. I was a total greenhorn in herping and went 2011 without a plan there and I found: Tarentola mauritanica, Hemidactylus turcicus, Lacerta bilineata, Podacris muralis(nigiriventris), Podacris sicula, Chalcides chalcides, Anguis fragilis, Hierophis viridflavus, Zamenis longissimus, Emys orbicularis , Pelophylax bergeri ,Pelophylax hispanica, Bufo bufo (spinosus), Ichthyosaura alpestris. I found a lot around dry rivers, ruins and ponds. I wasn't moving a lot there and found this speciem in 1km². So I think if you move around a little bit and search in typical habitats you will find a lot.
