I have been to Malta in the end of March 2016. Although time was limited during this two-day trip, I also searched once for H. algirus in the so-called bend over park (weird place, indeed...). A snake was caught within a short time, but unfortunately it was the "wrong" species.

Hierophis viridiflavus from the H. algirus site.

Could it be the case that since the last confirmation of the existence of H. algirus on Malta (2007?), this introduced species has been replaced by the native H. viridiflavus?

Not sure if algirus is really replaced by viridiflavus but it is indeed interesting and puzzling that they have not been sighted (as far as I know) after 2009:

An interesting sighting from 2006:

In 2010 when I searched for the first time for this species I have only found a slough of algirus.

I would guess that it would be all too coincidental that exactly in this time period they'd disappear, after having persisted for nearly a century. Surely, viridiflavus has been around all the time.

Thought this might interest several people around here, and surely was the highlight of my day! Apparantly this exogenous snake species still persists on Malta. This picture was made by Jérôme Maran and Fred Lavail who visited Malta last week and found this beauty there.

One of my friend spent 8 months in Malta. He spent a lot of time looking for snakes and didn't find any of these snakes...
