Big reddish male of Coronella girondica during a cool day

12/5/2020; 22 °C; cloudy humid afternoon on the hills near my hometown.
Not a very common species to be found outside.
At first I thought it could be a leopard snake or a young quatuorlineata/longissimus: but then I realized I was not in Croatia and that it was a beautiful male girondica, with a reddish dorsal hue and a yellow/black checkered belly.
The first pictures are all "in situ" ones.

It's not a coral snake, I know, and my english was probably not correct...
The pictures do not give justice to the colours of the snake. It's not red, clear: but in the last picture you can see the reddish hue on the neck.
The snake was more grey, but a reddish tone is actually there... trust me! :D ;)

I want to add that many years ago, in the hills of my province, I spotted a huge Natrix natrix over a ruin. Coiled on the top of a wall.
It was red, more red than this girondica: almost "blood red" or, better said, "rusty red", but with the usual markings of an otherwise 100% typical Natrix natrix! Never seen something like that, not even in pictures.

Beautiful snake! But I would not really call 22 C a "cool day". This is near perfect temperature for reptiles, especially snakes, at least where I live.

Beautiful specimen!
I understand what you mean about the shade of color, Ruggiero.
But looking at the belly I think it was not possible to fully admire its beauty, perhaps because it was about to carry out the ecdysis

Yes, 'coral' is exactly the colour I would use - just like this one I saw from the Dordogne, such a fabulous sort of girondica!
