The first Trip is over.
I was with my wife in North Italy, here a little report.

Sunday 04.04.
We arrived at 14.00 h Rovereto, dark grey sky, no sun, Temperature about 15 Degrees.
Nothing to do for the rest of the day, walked around in the city.

Monday 05.04.
In the morning, Temperatures about 13 Degrees, no sun, strong wind, we visited a small abbey, it is in the middle of a rock wall, called San Colombano.

Than we drove south, to the Lake San Colombano. The Lake is in a nice Valley, it`s a very good looking area, but less sun, a few Podarcis muralis were out, not more.

Playing around with the camera.

At noon we drove back to our hotel and decided to hike around in the backyard.
Sun was out and on the way to a rocky area I saw the first Lacerta bilineata.

Also a nice area, we hike a few hours but I found only muralis.

Tuesday 06.04.
Sun was out, Temperature at noon 20 Degrees, but a strong wind was blowing.
We were hiking around in the mountains at Lake Garda.

Found only muralis.

Than we made a walk at the north Side of the Lake and I saw a Natrix tessellata.

It was the first since many years so I decided to catch it and she bites me!!
And I remember very fast that it is a watersnake, but they don`t stink like Natrix natrix do.

Later I found some more in this area.

15 Minutes after I made this shot I came back, Snake and Lizard were gone.
But over the next rock about 50 cm away I found this!

Wednesday 07.04.
Relaxday, Nice weather in we visited the Mart (Museum of modern Art) in Rovereto.
At the afternoon we change our hotel and drove to a little village, north west of Bozen, called Nals.

Thursday 08.04.
A lot of sun, less wind.
I was hiking in the area of Pfatten-Vadena for Vipera ammodytes found only P. muralis.

015_pfatten.jpg

On the way back I stopped at Lake Branzoll (just a pound) and pictured a few fat Pelophylax ridibundus.

I planed to go next morning to the Rock slides east of Laifers to look for Vipera aspis. So I was there to check the area. The rock slides going until the road, I don`t want to make a rock avalanche and a big accident on the road so I change my plan.

I drove back to the area north west of Bozen and checked the rock slides at a village called Vilpian. Found a nice place for the morning.
Than I drove to an area that I visited the last time two years ago close to a village called Prisian. I found there the last time a few Hierophis viridiflavus and some Lacerta bilineata.
This time only a shy female bilineata.

Friday 09.04.
Still good weather,in the morning I was hiking in the Vilpian rock slides for Vipera aspis.
The rocks looks very close to the rocks south of Bozen.
The trees looks close.
The top wall looks close and I found nothing!

In the afternoon I was hiking with my wife. We found a pound in about 900m altitude
Were Bufo bufo start mating! There was a big wire fence around so no pics.

Saturday 10.04.
Warm, sunny, less wind. In the morning I was hiking south of Bozen near a city called Ora for Vipera ammodytes and found nothing.
At noon I drove to the south side of Lake Kaltern to look for Natrix natrix and (of course) I found nothing.
Pictured some Pelophylax during their mating games.

It was the first time that I hear a frog female making noises during copulation.

At the afternoon I was west of the Village Nals, it`s my hotspot for Salamandra there.
I found a pretty nice female there, with a red throat.

Very nice,Jurgen! I'm surprised that the first N.tessellata bit you..they don't usually do that..and I'm even more surprised that you say they don't stink like N.natrix! All of the tessellata I've ever found stink twice as badly as N.natrix!

Interesting report, Jürgen.
I like the picture with the water and moss.
Did the Podarcis know that tessellata eats fish or was it nervous?
