mystery lizard from S Italy

Postby Jeroen Speybroeck » Tue Oct 05, 2010 3:17 pm

Dear all,

Below some pictures of a lizard (or several?) from Lecce, Puglia (S Italy). Is this an (introduced) Algyroides or something from outside Europe?

Those of you who believe in a new species, feel free...

g's,

J.

Jeroen are you joking??? This is the well known Algyroides puglianus, former discript as Algyroides southitaliana! ;)

Serious, I have no Idea, but my guess is, introduced.

Looks very similar to Algyroides nigropunctatus, an individual with a lot of red that is.... otherwise perhaps something introduced from Africa, from the Adolfus genus???

I think these are 2 different individuals
I think they're Algyroides for sure.
The region is very close to A.nigropunctatus range so it should be
a) a recently introduced population from the other side,
b) a new different nigropunctatus ssp
and c) maybe a new different Algyroides species.

Someone has to go there and find out because the coloration is certainly different :-)
Whose are those photos Jeroen?

Algyroides nigropunctatus fits best. Maybe accidentially introduced by a ship...?

The photos were taken by a young man who claims to hold a colony of these lizards in his garden, in Santa Cesarea Terme , Lecce, Puglia.

But I doubt that he do not know how these lizards have arrived, because from a web search seems to be a biologist....

The pictures are not good, Algiroydes nigropunctatus or moreoticus

Come on, Jeroen, don't be so mysterious! I'm sure you also have an idea ;)

Not really, actually. I think/thought it's an Algyroides nigropunctatus (to me, it looks like all the same specimen). The red/pinkish colouration does not strike me as extraordinary for this species.

However, the scaling on the flanks in the second picture looks ... strangely blurry. I thought there are some lacertids from outside Europe that also have this type of dorsal scales. Being a eurocentric idiot, I don't know these species, so that's is why I asked.
