FUURRRR MANDERSSSSS, NW Espagna

Postby GertJan Verspui » Mon May 14, 2012 8:43 pm

The 27th of april untill the 6th of may I went on a little roadtrip with Bert, Jan, Jeroen, Wouter and Bobby, I know this is not new information, but we had some showers during the trip, no worries for us, because rain is just an other way of good weather....

The photos I will show you here might look a little familiar..........Enjoy!!

Under a little umbrella we found this smooth snake...and some other friends of my photo-making-device....

4.jpg
Alytes obstetricans

5.jpg
Podarcis muralis

In a village there were some man made water places with a roof above it, so these were the first animals found while we did not feel rain.......

That night after we had a fantastic meal and some beers(just a few) there were 3 guys who wanted to go outside, after telling the 4th(B) that he would miss a great adventure, he changed his mind and went with us, the results were great, after the waterplace where we saw 5 Triturus marmoratus, we went into the woods behind it to look for Salamandra, 2 guys were fast as lightning and B and I lost sight of them within the first 2 minutes, even blowing the "poepfluit" did not help to find them.....

10a.jpg
Triturus marmoratus

The separate doubles both found one Salamandra, this is the one that B found.

The next day I made a deal with the sun, follow our van.........I managed to meet with the first Hyla molleri and it became very popular when I introduced it to the others..

Next stop was a good spot..................................

and
16.jpg
Triturus marmoratus

Lacerta bilineata ans Chalcides striatus were also found here

Only a short distance away Jan found an Asp Viper, so everybody was happy again...
17.jpg
Vipera aspis

We also visited a place where aspis and latastei both live, but we found no hybrids.
That night we arrived in the Picos and it was raining, but thats no surprise.....is it???
Results:
18.jpg
Rana temporaria parvipalmata

and many of the next Salamandra
19.jpg
Salamandra salamandra bernardezi

The next day we went higher into the picos and I loved the place, we even had very short periods of sunshine........
20.jpg
Iberolacerta monticola cantabrica

an other male!!

The next place was a place where we found some reasons to smile again...

Because it was Queensday........can not think of an other reason.....

Vipera seoanei cantabrica and Iberolacerta galani were next...........but every time someone mentioned that viper, rain started to fall down again, so Galani...... was not a great idea also.....
BUT, before we arrived at the galani place we came by an area which seem to have potential for us, and this time the sun was with us..
33.jpg
Coronella girondica

34.jpg
Rhinechis scalaris

At the Galani spot we did not see any of them, but a juvenile and an adult male of Lacerta schreiberi took the pain away for a little while.
35.jpg
Lacerta schreiberi

That night we stayed in a nice hotel and because the pain was becoming worse again, we needed lots of beer...........(and some fool thought throwing spiritus in the beer was a good idea, gave the plants some of that special juice)
In the morning it did not look good for Galani, but we went anyway........

......and found almost nothing again, Podarcis bocagei and 1 juvenile Iberolacerta galani which I managed to dig out of a place which looked more like a garbage-dump.
36.jpg
Iberolacerta galani

Now it was time to go to the beach, the best place for us , because we are actually all very handsome beachboys.......on the beach there were very hot models waiting for us...

The trip is not over yet, so more photos are to be expected SOON!!!!!!!

Ok the writing and uploading starts again, (after a good night sleep with almost some romance.........)

The place we are now is a place with S s gallaica, we went there straight after we visited the island, so 2 locations in one night, this is what we found...........

The next day we woke up later than normal because of our night adventures, first we went to a place with Emys orbicularis, but only W saw 2 oof them, then he hid them somewhere and called us, we saw nothing.............
And because W did that terrible egocentric thing, we left him somewhere to continue the trip on his own.......(maybe this part is a little different from the other reports..)

Ok, lets try to find V seoanei cantabrica again, conditions were great....................for amphibians.........one moment we met the sun and got out of our van straight away, no vipers, only 2 Anguis fragilis....
That night we slept in a sort of truckers motel, which had some crazy guests, there were guys walking around pretending to be a pirate, including pirate-lemonade (brown Rum) and pirate noises.......(AAARRRGGGHHH)........., but other crazy local guests were smoking illegal drugs inside of the motel........

Next morning we were happy to leave that shithole, waved to the criminals.....(or took them with us....) and went to a viper place near Burgos, but did I mention before that we had some rain during the trip.............only Timon lepidus was doug out.

Next spot, Psammodromus hispanicus was the target.......at first we searched while it was clouded and found.......

46.jpg
Podarcis liolepis

50.jpg
Timon juvenile

48.jpg

When the sun finally came I saw 1, but it was gone very fast, we decided to stay and wait for the sun to show its strenght again, after a while I cought one with the help of Bert and Jan, B also found one, I also found the 4th Coronella girondica of the trip hidden in a dead tree.

47.jpg
Psammodromus hispanicus, there it is......

49.jpg
and after I cought it....

Pyrenees were the only thing between us and home, so we went there to have a good finale, good turned into great................

51.jpg
Bufo bufo, they tried to make a toad-tower, but it collapsed..

SHIT, not able to ad an other attachment............... :(

Finally!!! ;) ;) ;) Good stuff, GJ ! Seems you are a sucker for saturated colours even more than I am ;)

Mario Schweiger wrote:I love this orange latastei´s

Is it just my biased impression, or is that type of colour indeed more common in e.g. ammodytes than in latastei, Mario (et al.)? Having seen many more of the former species, I might just be wrong, don't know...?

These are the first so brightly colored in my life!
Even De Smedt and Guido Kreiner have only pictures of latastei with "a bit of color" in their books.
Gratulations on yours, they are really great - nothing to say more - just great :o
