Hyla meridionalis to be found on Majorca?

Postby Heiko Wehner » Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:20 pm

Hey there and a late happy new year to everyone!

I'm planning a trip to Majorca (will be living near Artà) around the end of march/beginning of may. Currently I'm looking around for some nice spots for some days of herping via Google and stumbled upon a site where it says that aside from Alytes mutilensis, Pelophylax perezi and Bufo viridis there is also Hyla meridionalis to be found on the island.
By now that's the only site where I read this, so I thought maybe one of you may know if it's true.

Cheers,

Heiko

Many reptiles have also established themselves in the past decades on Majorca and also Ibiza, so far only H.meridionalis seems to be a recent amphibian introduction. Reptiles that can now be found there include: Psammodromus algirus, Mauremys leprosa, Rhinechis scalaris, Hemorrhois hippocrepis and Malpolon monspessulanus. There have even been several Chamaeleo chameleon found at one area. I have a paper somewhere in English which describes all of the introductions, online you can read about some of them here (in Spanish): http://www.herpetologica.org/BAHE/BAHE21_[150]_33_Cons09.pdf

Woah, that's quite a lot I think.
And besides all those species I found an article about a population of Podarcis siculus campestris on the island as well. Quite a mixture on the island, though very little species really belong there.
I'm pretty excited what I'll find (if anything  ) during my stay.
Considering that I'm only going to stay for a week or so AND it's officially a "visit your parents which you haven't seen in a while-trip", so I won't be able to spend as much time in the field as I'd like to, I think I'll concentrate my search on the eastern coast, thus sadly leaving out the opportunity to search A. muletensis, but I'll go for them the next time.

Again, thanks for the infos!
