short trip to Sierrs de Gredos Spain

Postby miguel santos » Mon May 19, 2014 10:27 pm

Hi everybody,
I went from the 29th of Aprl till the 2nd of May to Gredos in Spain. As usual I went with my wife and two kids but that does not limit the herp fun at all.
I will place my pictures in about 3 phases because of lack of time and I still need to sort out some pics.
I start with the snakes: All were found as we walked in the area mountain of near the river Termes.
Only the Natrix natrix was found under a wood board next to a lot of litter near Navarredonda de Gredos.
Enjoy,

Miguel

Nice,

are all these Coronellas girondicas?
the brown one looks like austriaca (dark stripe runs from the eye to the nasal region and not to top of head).

I agree, the third is austrica. When I saw her I though it wad also a girondica (just because I had seen the big male just before) but asbI was taking the shots I realised that it was not. But were seen at about 19:00

The shape of the rostral scale gives them away much more reliably than pattern.

I agree 100% with Mario, Borja and cia. Girondica/Girondica/Austriaca

It´s a pity that the grass snake was shedding because some Gredos individuals are really nice!

Cheers and congrats for your findings

 Well, "acuti" (= sharp) or not, the triangular rostral scale goes for austriaca in any case. As I'm sure (at least) you now, of course (silly me...).
