Vipera latastei

Postby Magnus Öhrn » Wed Aug 13, 2014 6:57 pm

Hello!
I am planning a trip to Spain in April next year, mainly to look for Vipera latastei. I know that I won´t get specific locations but I hope to get some tip of the best regions to improve my chances. According to research on the internet I have got the feeling that Coto Donana can be such a region. Is this correct or are there better places to look for the species?
Best regards!
Magnus

Good info on this site - you should find about as much publically-available info as you can reasonably hope for on here. Common sense and Google Earth searching will guide you the rest of the way.

Doñana would definitely not be my bet for an easy latastei.

Obviously, it's a very nice website and I have been using it in the past myself. It's a shame how they seem to have described that subspecies online, yet the data to support is is there, if I remember well.

Having worked in Doñana for several months, I don't think there is such a thing as an easy latastei. Probably the best place to find one, but the odds won't be good.

? Weird kind of logic. Yes, there are places where finding them isn't much or even any harder than finding any other European viper. No, Doñana is not such a place. If you scrutinize the internet, you will find trip reports from certain areas delivering one or more latastei on practically every single trip. This is far from the case for Doñana.

Aah, I misread your first post with my groggy, pre-coffee eyes and thought you were recommending Doñana. They can be found there, but it's a long shot even in specific locations where they're known to occur. I know some of the good, non-Doñana areas.
