Andalusia / S-Portugal 2015

Postby Julius Zidorn » Tue May 05, 2015 10:46 am

Hi,

with a delay of some weeks, here is my report from the trip to S-Iberia (March 30th - April 11th).
Most of the time we had great weather (sunny with 20 to 28 degrees), and the two rainy days we used to reach our amphibian targets.
We were very successfull with finding 32 species of reptiles and amphibians.

I haven´t written a trip report yet, so here are just the pics. I will start with the amphibians and other nice findings.
Many thanks to Benny Trapp, Mathijs Hollanders, Jeroen Speybroeck and Pablo Deschepper for their useful help!

Cheers,
Julius

Best for the end, very nice find! I really like the Macrothele calpeiana too. Would you have pictures of both habitats?

Well done, especially with the mythical gaditana in the mix! That timing probably works better than going later in that area. I sure remember how hard (adult) amphibians were in the 2nd half of April. But maybe you were also lucky with the weather...

The two babies Malpolon are male (the first specimen) and female (the second one): sex differences in colour/markings are present already from birth, even if they become more evident with age.

P.S. At first I didn't notice the maura courtship/mating under water!

Very nicely done, and a beautiful latastei to finish off. You have done better in one trip than I have done in a dozen!
