Ria Formosa (Tavira, Portugal), late April 2015

Postby Ronald Zimmerman » Sat May 16, 2015 1:57 pm

During my holidays I did two trips. One with my girlfriend to Portugal (Tavira) and one with my friends to Spain (Sierra de Andújar). This report is about my six days trip to Tavira. I really wanted to see the Common Chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon), so that was my only real herping goal. My girlfriend is not into herping, but she really likes cute animals. Tree frogs, geckos and chameleons are on the 'cute list'. We did a lot of chameleon searching and it turned out that she is the better searcher. I found them at night time, and she found them active during daytime. She was very determined to find them for me (she saw it made me very happy). :D
It is not a long list, but I achieved my single goal. I already know what Paul will comment about the time that I was not herping. ;)

Hi Ronald,
Nice to see that "many" chameleons in Portugal, I am happy if I see one per day...... when I go and look for them.
I did not know you could find them in the Island of Tavira.I only went there to look for birds.
Thanks for the post.

Great shots mate! Who cares for a short list if you have so many chameleons around!

It may surprise some, but long lists are not always necessary to have a top-notch trip - chams rock!

I knew it because I saw a chameleon photo on that location on Flickr. :) There were also not many people :)

Thanks! Your advice on how to photograph them was also very helpful. :) Indeed, and more chameleons than I expected. :D
No you certainly did not tell me to go.. :p

Thank you very much Laura! Chameleons are also very photogenic animals. :)

For me it is quality over quantity all the time. I had a great time. Chameleons really rock. They give me the same kind of emotions as the agamids in Southeast Asia. :) The Common Chameleon is now one of my favorite European species. :)

Great photo's. I've been to Ria Formosa several times and have yet to connect with a Chameleon. Hopefully next time.

Lucky you, indeed.
