Vipera latastei

Postby Peter Oefinger » Fri Sep 25, 2015 10:50 am

Dear all,

In early September I did another trip to south-eastern Spain. It was mainly about lizards – so I limit myself on a short note:

Vipera latastei has been the only Iberian snake I hadn’t seen before. Hence, at the beginning of the trip I went to the province of Teruel which is – if you believe the internet – a good place for latastei. I don’t know anyone who has been in that area before, so I didn’t have any concrete spots. I justwent to the next place which looked promising: a rocky slope with some Juniperus bushes at over 1000 m osl.. I got out of the car – and succeeded: within 10 minutes I found an adult basking in the morning sun. Congrats to myself! :D

This is what for me herping is about: sometimes you search for hours at a well-known spot and don’t find your target species – sometimes you just get a lucky shot…

For the few among you which are interested in lizards, you can find my report on my pages: http://www.bpo-natura.de/en/index.php?id=659

Cheers
Peter

This makes me want to go back, like immediately. Last year a friend and I spend like 5 days looking for this species without any result.

Nice post. Really jealous of the Pelodytes. Jaen produces more olives than all of Greece. Those agricultural deserts are nuts... really impressive when driving up to that upper Guadalquivir Valley vista!

Thanks guys.
@Matthijs: I'm not sure about Pelo punctatus. Bobby told me that maybe it is something else.

@Thomas: you know I love talking about lizards. Be it in Gersfeld or even Vienna... ;)

Great report, Oefinger's ;)
But something went wrong with you (maybe to hot in the south?) :o
You started your report with a viper - and not with its food

What else it should be?
