Iberian Salamandra Quiz

Postby Wouter Beukema » Fri Sep 16, 2011 8:31 pm

In reply to Peter's Salamandra, here are several Iberian Salamandra subspecies - try to guess which one! Some are easy, some are downright treacherous! A total of six subspecies are present among these.

So, seems Mario is also an expert in Salamandra - all are right! Number 7 is an eastern morenica from the Sierra de Segura. But, also Jeroen is partially right regarding photo 3; this is morphologically gallaica, but crespoi on mtDNA level! (2) is indeed an a-typical almanzoris with red spots, originating from the Laguna Grande.

This leaves us with:
1 crespoi
2 almanzoris
3 crespoi/gallaica
4 bernardezi
5 longirostris
6 crespoi
7 morenica
8 ?? - not almanzoris, this one is still unidentified.
9 fastuosa

Where does 8 come from. Not morenica? Of course, almanzoris was a silly guess...

Thank you for your valuable contribution. I am really sorry you have to endure this salamanderism, which is unfortunately a part of fieldherping too.
