I did some herp work in Azerbaijan the last years but my focus was turtles and newts so far.
I plan a tour next May to AZ again to find specific lizards. Besides this I also want to see some vipers.
In the common literature I found only two species inhabiting the NE Caucasus: lebetina (at the foothills) and renardi.
Does anyone in this forum know about further viper species accounts? Did anybody trips or research in the area of eastern part of Great Caucasus, Azerbaijan at ShaDag, Qusar, Quba?

Hello Markus,

Gloydius h. caucasicus occurs in Azerbaijan.
Maybe transcaucasiana reaches AZ too?
Moritz Wagner collected 2 Vipera "aspis" near the village Kobi at the beginning of August 1843, south of Kasbek mountain (but this is in Georgia). It looks like, these two vipers never reached Germany, at least they are not mentioned by Berthold 1850. Would be interesting, what this could be ;)

Hi Mario,

Gloydius reaches South Azerbaijan and transcaucasiana the Western part around Gence.

I ask myself if the lack of dinniki or similiar vipers in easternmost parts of Great Caucasus is just because nobody got a closer look...
At the other hand, none of the famous Russian herpetologists found such vipers there...or did I miss some article...?

I can't help with the vipers but I'd love to see some more photos from Azerbaijan. It's not very often that people do trips to that part of the world.
