a new year, a new Pelodytes (or two)?

Evidence has been accreting that the Pelodytes of most of (western) Portugal may represent a species in its own right. A new paper seems to confirm this. Moreover, it hints that yet another new species occupies much of Spain, excluding the range of the South-Central Iberian Pelodytes ibericus and Catalonia where (together with France and NW Italy) the "leftovers" of Pelodytes punctatus sensu stricto reside.

Watch for updates in Mario's database for the full article.

To pimp the news, here's one of each from my archives. Why not turn this into a wintery "I love Pelodytes" thread, so add your shots too!?

There is any morphological difference between these new species ?

I only know Pelodytes from the Var, in France (so Pelodytes punctatus), especially in a little pond where they are very common :

Great shots, especially with those predation and amplexus examples, thanks!

Who's got some more..?

That second one sure is colourful!

I'm throwing in one additional pic from France to illustrate some variability.

I love Alytes and adore Hyla and with Pelodytes seeming somehow an odd mixture of these two taxa, I love them too!

Good stuff, guys! Anyone has any half-decent or better shots of eggs or larvae? Or maybe that funny vertical calling position of the males...?
