Pelophylax kl. esculentus?!

Postby Vlad Cioflec » Mon Aug 24, 2009 12:47 pm

Hi gang,

I was going through the pics from the recent southern Moldavia trip, and i came across this rather different looking frog.
I did not pay much attention to the specimen at the time, as it was hanging out with other big ridibundus, and i was actually waiting for a Bombina to surface ; but now that i look at the shots, i`m not so sure of what it is.
Could be just my old office PC monitor, but now it looks light green with some yellow on the legs... What do think ?!

Cropped from larger compositions, so i`m sorry for the quality:

Thanks!

Vlad,

as far as possible to look at your images, the metatarsaltubercle (Callus internus) looks very narrow and flat.
I think it is ridibundus.
Also a bit of "yellowish", but not bright yellow, may occur on ridibundus.

I think is a P. esculentus after coloration, after tubercle... the picture is not enough to see the shape - my opinion.

No I don´t think that it is a ridibundus.
How big was this water-frog.
I think it is lessonae, because of the big callus internus, (Look at the toes and look at the callus internus)
and because of the colour at the beginning of the legs.
But you can say it only with sure, with a DNA probe or in comparision with an other Waterfrog.

I also think the callus internus is too big for a ridibundus, but can't say what species the frog is!

I´m not sure, if, what you see on the left hind limb is the Callus internus!
Lokks more like an airbubble or something else.

I`ve cropped the pics some more, and to me it does not look like an air bubbule or some debries. My vote goes to esculentus for the momment, but i wanna get more imput from the forum members. Don`t be shy now. ;)
