Skinks from Morocco - ID

Postby Thor Hakonsen » Sat Apr 11, 2015 12:38 pm

I'm not very familiar with skinks, and how to differentiate the two moroccon species - can someone help on ID these ? Two different specimens, one very close to Guelmim, and one some 20-30km away from Guelmim. I guess both is the same.
And an feedback on the ID of the Acanthodactylus pardalis would also be appreciated

The skink look like Chalcides polylepis, at least the upper one.
You have another pic of the lower one?
The Acantho is a very nice male of A. pardalis, or, if you like the splitted version, Acanthodactylus busacki

Thanks Mario,

My impression is that the lower one was a bit smaller than the first one - here is a additional picture.

Hope it helps - I think I might have some bad pictures from the top if necessary

looks like polylepis too.
Just to confirm: is the animal on the bad picture from top striped? like here: http://vipersgarden.at/cascade/species_land.php?varname=Chalcides%20mionecton

ok, now I'm (nearly) sure ;)
it is Chalcides ocellatus (sometimes very hard to find the difference between ocellatus and polylepis, but on the last picture you see the ocelli very well).

Thank you very much Mario.

So, then I set the first one as P.polylepis, and the second one P.occelatus - if no one rejects it :) Report from the trip will come during the weekend I hope. Soon finished with editing the pics

Good show Mario,
I only saw the thread now and I had the same questions you had as I went through.
I was in and arround Guelmim last year and saw several polylepis but only one ocellatus. I like your second pic from the ocelattus, by the way.
The pardalis is a great looking lizard. It also kracked my head last year when I saw them but Mario also came to the rescue.
