D.O.R. Cres, Croatia

Postby Soeren Moeller » Fri Sep 15, 2017 9:26 pm

Hi everybody, I have few experiance with determination of reptiles, especially in the meditarranean. During my family holiday this year on the island cres (end of july to the beginning of august), we found two dead snakes on roads, which were in no good state. Perhaps a determination is possible, nevertheless.

The 3rd from the bottom looks like Natrix natrix persa for me.

I'd say first one - Telescopus fallax, second one - Malpolon insignitus.

Ilian has seen the right species: Telescopus and Malpolon. The snakes are only two.
The white longitudinal stripe you see, which induced you to incorrectly think at a striped Natrix, is actually simply (at least it seems to be) the whitish vertebral spine which shows itself, due to the advanced rotting status of the body.

With uniformly coloured, more or less whitish, belly scales?! (See the 2nd photo from the bottom - I'd
say those in the left part of the picture are belly scales... or what? If not, I will apologize publicly...)

No, Ilian has it right, 99.999%.

Many thanks for your help ! We haven't seen a living Malpolon unfortunately, but we were lucky to find a baby-Telescopus outside the sanitary house of our camping site at night (unfortunately without camera).
