Fire salamanders killed by newly discovered fungus

Postby Maarten Gilbert » Tue Sep 03, 2013 8:40 pm

A newly discovered fungus, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, appears to be responsible for nearly wiping out the few remaining fire salamander populations in the Netherlands:

Since 2010, the species has declined, with only 4% of the population remaining in 2013.
 I was not aware it was so serious... Disquieting news :!:

Then you should find out

Seriously, though, from what I've learned, a massive amount of monitoring has been conducted. On the other hand, there are only few species that are harder to assess population size.
