Herptrips 2015

Postby Bobby Bok » Sun Jan 04, 2015 11:34 pm

With winter in full swing it is always nice to plan trips for the upcoming year and read about others plans. So, what are your plans for the new year?

Here are my more or less certain plans:

April/May
North(east)ern Turkey for salamanders and vipers.

Summer
A first adventure to Africa: Malawi and Zambia with several friends from university. Exploring its forests for endemic chameleons, frogs and snakes.

October
Morocco

My plans for this year :

April :
Italy near La Spezia for Speleomantes and Salamander. It will be a very short trip (2-3 days I think).

April/May :
Corsica of course and maybe a very short trip to sardinia, mainly for Orthoptera (Pamphagus sardeus) but I will certainly looking for some Speleomantes.

Summer : An alpine trip, Haute-Alpes in France, Piemonte in Italy and maybe Switzerland also. Hoping for salamanders (S.atra and S.lanzai) and newts.

So a very european year !

I don't know where I will go after summer :D

February: 1 week - Tenerife or Tunisia with the family, probably little or no herping
April: 2 weeks - Peninsular Malaysia - "true" herping trip
July: 3 weeks or more - SE USA with the family, trying to squeeze in a shortlist of desirables
+ 1 week left for herping, that might coincide with Herr Bok's Oktoberfest... er... trip, if my girl will let me.

Hopefully, there will be no rain, freezing cold en strong winds at home when I'm gone, because I'm hoping to be able to do as much significant 'mandering as last year ;)

All my plans are currently put on hold due to uncertainties in relation to my work schedule.

That said, I probably won't be going abroad much.

I'm still hoping for a long weekend in Spain in April.

A second long weekend in May, alternately September or October, would be nice. I would like to go somewhere new but matching the dual concerns of dates and airfare limits the options and atm yet another Israel trip looks like the obvious choice.

Finally I hope to go somewhere more or less herpable for a week or two of summer vacation with my wife and kids and sneak off or take them with me now and then for a target or two.

Worst case I could still end up stuck with my local critters all year.

...oh and btw, that Zambia / Malawi trip sounds very interesting. I'm jealous.

I forgot another target for 2015. I know, I know, it's as silly as targets get  , but I'm hoping to reach 500 species on my global herping list. Give or take a few, that means I need to see at least 28 new species this year :ugeek:

In April my wife and I are taking another road trip in our van, heading down through France, Switzerland and then into NW Italy returning via Switzerland,Germany and France.

In May we are returning to the Picos de europa with Matt Wilson and Carl Corbidge, we have a few target species but I am not going to jinx the trip by naming them.
