herpetological parenting

Postby Jeroen Speybroeck » Thu Sep 15, 2016 1:03 pm

I'm going to annoy people who hate pics of kids now. Be warned.

Before this summer, my son got of course already some essential species.

Image
fire salamander Salamandra salamandra & Bas (1yr)

Image
smooth snake Coronella austriaca and Bas (2yr)

Image
admiring a Plethodon yonahlossee, I believe, last year, when he was 3.

Image
same trip, Crotalus horridus

Image
Lampropeltis triangulum

Image
Hellbender!

Image
gator!

After a successful but too short trip to see Vipera walser (http://www.hylawerkgroep.be/jeroen/index.php?id=80), I spent the summer in my home country. Not as exciting as touring the eastern US (http://www.hylawerkgroep.be/jeroen/index.php?id=79), but at least my 4 year old hero did some serious lifelisting.

Slow worms Anguis fragilis are always fun. Bike had to hit the ground fast, because those boards needed to be flipped.

Image

Yellow-bellied toad Bombina variegata. The good thing about a kid of his age, is that he forgot he already saw this one two years ago, so fresh and wild enthusiasm again!

Image

A baby natterjack Epidalea calamita.

Image

Catching tree frogs should be a mandatory thing at school - the perfect poster frog to win a kid's (and people's) heart!

Image

Smelly snake - grass snake Natrix natrix

Image

Never drop the herp theme, even when it's cold and rainy!

I have no kids of my own, so I used other people's kids to the same purpose. But that was in those
untroubled days when one wouldn't answer in court for taking pictures of other people's kids...
either with herps or otherwise. So, acceptable here, or not? (In all the cases the parents gave their
full consent, or even asked for it themselves, but that was then...)

Hate pics of kids? Are there people like that? If yes, I'm sorry if anyone is offended but that's just unnatural

But let's not stain this thread with stuff like that, the kids deserve better. My two years old daughter also has some species on her "list" but I don't recall taking photos, which I now regret. I'll check if I have something. Nevertheless, I try to provide her with such experience much to the horror of all her ophiophobic (is there such a word?) grand parents

Surely, bringing nature into a kid's life doesn't have to be restricted to your own offspring. It is, however, obvious that my son has been exposed to herping to a somewhat higher degree than his classmates...

Ah, I see...Of course, it is much less annoying to post selfies in front of the mirror and photos of your lunch than posting photos of something that you are proud of and actually made a huge difference to your life.

So, where are we now, regarding this so "sensitive" or "delicate" issue?
Any opinions and/or contributions by anyone else?

Hi Jeroen.

Please don't bring me into the discussion by quoting some old post.
Not into kiddie-photos on public forums or social media, as I find the lack of consent of posting photos a bit troublesome, but am all for teaching kids about herps.

Just photos of kids = creepy.
Kids leaning about herps = money in the bank.

Cheers.

The smilies were used to indicate that I was only teasing. Don't take yourself so seriously, I don't. ;)

Thought so, but just in case. This isn't the subtlest of forums.
I don't take either of us seriously :)

I lost most of the ones I had in a hard disk crash a couple of years ago and looking through my pictures I just realized I pretty much haven't really taken any since :( '

Nonetheless, here are a "few", in roughly reverse chronological order

With T. proximus (affectionately named "Lille Per" - a character from a classic Danish children's movie)

With C. cerastes

The whole family, taking a short break from lizard hunting before the evening snake tracking session
Image

With C. chameleon ("Daddy, what's this?")

With N. natrix
