Hello

Hi everyone

Like most people on this forum I became interested in herpetology at a very early age, although it took me a while to find anything other than frogs and toads! I went through a long phase of keeping and breeding captive herps although I sold the majority of my collection when I went off to university over ten years ago.

These days I much prefer seeing herps in their natural environment and combine fieldherping with my passion for travelling. I also have a very active interest in mammals and birds.

On an ideal trip I’ll split my time between herping, mammal watching and birding. This normally works well, but does mean I’m a bit of ‘a Jack of all trades – master of none’ when it comes to knowledge!

I look forward to learning and sharing on what seems to be a friendly and knowledgeable forum.

I’ll end with a few photos.

Dear Mike,
Really enjoyed your story.
We also believe that herping, birding and mammal watching go together really well.
Looking forward to your reports, and welcome aboard!

Vlad

PS: Any snakey photos from Texas?!

Thank you for the welcoming comments.

Mario – my next trip is to Abruzzo, Italy so hopefully I will have some European photos to add. Having said that I’m going in the middle of October so I guess I won’t see too many reptiles!

The Texas photo was taken on private land in Terlingua, just outside Big Bend National Park. I was looking for Crotalus species with a local herper but unfortunately it wasn’t really the best time of the year for snakes (February!).

We did find some Big Bend Tree Lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) and Canyon Lizards (Sceloporus merriami) together with many scorpions and a tarantula. No snake photos but those interested in the trip can find more below.
