A friend of mine has been bitten by an approx. 1 metre Crotalus terrificus (south american rattlesnake) in a reptile zoo in southern Austria.
Death occured within one hour.
He was an experienced reptile keeper, also in handling venomous snakes.

By this tragic accident, I want to remember you, to be very carefull when handling vipers etc, also by just placing them for a good photo.
Dont come to close with your hands, arms, head when taking the picture!
And remember, also our "harmless" European vipers may give you a serious bite under bad circumstances!

The bite was between thumb and second finger on the back of the hand - with both fangs.

Very tragic indeed. I also just read about this on a Dutch news website:

Bad new Mario. I´m sorry for your friend. It´s "good" to read this things because it remeber us this is not a play and snakes are very independent and if we forget it and we lose the attention we can be bitten. Last year an israeli friend (Amir, friend of Aviad Bar, of this forum) was bitten by a Daboia palaestinae, when the snake was catched and he was talking with the owners of the house where the snake had entered. He lost the conscience just in some seconds. We must be carefull...
