Our best bird so far!

Postby Vlad Cioflec » Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:55 am

This weekend we roadcruised in the moldavian steppes and despite the freezing temperatures we were able to turn up a few critters here and there, including a Common Tree Frog and best of all, two new species for us - the amazing Merlin and the endangered Saker!

A year has passed since we saw the Saker, a year where outings were few and far between. But all this time spent doing chores or `working` at the office gave me the chance to reminisce and to make all sorts of lists with best lifers, coolest twitches, disappointing dips and so on. :geek:

Long story short, the Saker encounter won the title for best birding experience so far. It had it all: really rare bird, self found, shared the moment with my wife and baby girl, and we even got some pretty decent pictures.
So this is what i`ve done yesterday to honour that special moment:

Vlad,

Congrats on your ink and your two new lifers.. Merlins are very common where I live, as there are a great many ponds with high dragonfly populations.. the Saker I have seen a few times in Hungary.. a stunning bird..

Cheers Paul

Hey Paul,

I am just wondering, did you mean Hobbys instead of Merlins? I see Hobbies eating dragonflies all summer on my local patch, but as Merlins are winter visitors in eastern Europe i am used to see or hear about them chasing only small birdies...
