Turkish Scorpion Species

Postby Daniel Kane » Mon Aug 16, 2010 9:46 pm

Hi,

I found this small scorpion is Turkey April 2009. It was found in the same area as most of my observations in Turkey, the area between Antalya and Alanya. I'm not sure which species it is, as I am by no means an expert on scorpions... yet. Does anyone know which species are found in this area, or what kind of scorpion this is?

Any help I.D.ing would be great.

Thanks

Hello Daniel.

I think it should be an Euscorpius sp.
There are many similar species. I send my photos allways to Jan Ove Rein.
You can find his mail adress here: http://www.ntnu.no/ub/scorpion-files/

Thanks Sebastian and Michael. I had a look on that website, and you're right, it does look like a Calchas nordmanni. When I found it I was thinking a small Methobuthus, but from that photos shown it could well be an Calchas. The range does fit too.

Actually, that should be Calchas gruberi now, since nordmanni was split into 3 species; C. nordmanni in NE Turkey, gruberi in Megisti, Samos and south Turkey, and C. birulai in E Turkey and Iraq.

Cheers!
