holidays in Costa Rica

For your reports/images, made outside Europe and the "Mediterranean" countries. Not to be too narrow minded and limited to our European/Mediterranean herps.

holidays in Costa Rica

Postby Sebastian Holzki » Sat Nov 10, 2012 8:30 pm

In February and March I was for three weeks in Costa Rica with my brother. This time is the dry season.
In this thread I want to show a few findings. The first time we were in Monteverde, Santa Elena. The second half we spent in Ojochal at the Pacific coast.
It was not really a herping trip, but I also looked for them.

It started very good on the way to Santa Elena we stopped at a creek. There we saw many younger Basiliscus basiliscus, one Ctenosaura similis (quickly disappeared into the thicket) and for me the best one Mastigodryas melanolomus.

At the lodge we stayed we saw at night this small unidentified frog.

Around Santa Elena we found one time near the road this female Sceloporus malachiticus.

One day we visited the Reserva Bosque Nuboso de Santa Elena, a nice cloud forest. At the entrance of the Reserve we were shown a green snake on a tree. It was a Bothriechis lateralis, unfortunately high on a tree so that we only got pictures from below. In the Reserve we have seen probably a good camouflaged Craugastor sp., Megaphobema mesomelas (a big Tarantula endemic to central america), an Anolis, Ateles geoffroyi (Spider monkey) an many more.

Always good to see central American wildlife. Really liked the shot of the Swallow-tailed Kite, stunning birds indeed.

Waiting for the next instalment.

Thanks for replies. Now I´m going on....

One day we had a trip to the Parque Nacional Carrara. Near the Park you have the Río Tárcoles. The river is good known for the high number of Crocodylus acutus and a magnet for many tourists. At the entrance of the Parque Nacional Carrara you can also find the first reptiles (Ctenosaura similis). In the forest we found Anolis sp., Gonatodes albogularis, Sphenomorphus cherriei, Ctenosaura similis, Basiliscus basiliscus, Ameiva sp. and a few young toads. My highlight was a small Bothriechis schlegelii at a tree trunk. Unfortunately you came not near to the snake because the tree stand beside a bridge on which we stood. But we have also seen many birds like Ara macao.

In Santa Elena we´ve seen this cute squirrel. Should be Sciurus variegatoides.

On our night trip we´ve seen this lizard (I don´t know the species) sleeping on a tree. High on a tree hang again a Bothriechis lateralis (no photo).

Nice pictures, the Megaphobema is splendid, and the Mastigodryas melanolomus are very intersting animals too (it's maybe Dryadophis melanolomus now). It seems that the Crocodylus spot is indeed a touristic one because I can see regularly via facebook people who have been there. Anyway, thanks for posting your Costa Rica pics,

Guillaume

The second part of our trip we were in Ojochal. From there we visited the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, Parque Nacional Chirripó, the peninsula Osa and Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barú. Here are a few pics from there.
