Australia Dec14 - Jan15

Postby Rémon ter Harmsel » Mon Apr 13, 2015 5:25 pm

In December and January I spent 5 weeks in Australia on holiday with my girlfriend. Though not really a 'tick-as-many-species-as-possible' holiday, I did manage to come up with a pretty decent list of herpspecies. We've spent about 2.5 weeks in Northern Territory, driving from Darwin to Uluru. From there we drove up north again (a little bit) to Alice Springs, from where we flew to Cairns on the Eastern coast. From Cairns we drove North to Cape Tribulation, then South following the coast untill Brisbane.

It took me a while to sort out all the pictures, but here are some (ok; quite a few). With daytime temperatures reaching over 40C in NT and around 30 on the coast, snake activity was very limited during the day. Nighttime however, proved to be quite productive. I'm not a big fan of unneccesary handling or overnight keeping, so most nighttime pictures are (very) short sessions with flashlight and/or cameraflash. Did have to move a number of snakes and other critters off the road at night to prevent them from being runover, which is a common sight .

I always though, Australia is the continent of Elapids
But anyway, very nice collection of amphibians and reptiles and many of them with scientific names, I never heared before ;)

The rain brought out those frogs in decent numbers I see. Great sightings and impressive species list, gotta love Australia!

Thanks guys!

Mario: true, but for some reasons pythons were much easier to find, though only a fraction of the elapid species.
Bobby: the Lialis has a huge distribution range, covering almost the whole of Australia. Quite often found on roads at night, on the hunt for geckos. A lot of variation between different localities too, awesome animal!!

Will upload another batch soon.
