Great report. Vipers hidden seem very camouflaged. It must be very difficult to find them. Natrix natrix subspecies of Cyprus is also very cool!!

Besides, interesting information about the viper-minefields/basking habits.
Which lens did you use for the in-situ shots?

Hi
The day after tomorrow I am flying for my one week cypriot herping. I will be accommodated in neighbourhood of Gime. Every practical tips are welcome. Aww, Daniel, how not to step on a Macrovipera? Avoiding grasslands? I will report what is going on!

Hi, you may have some chance to find Macrovipera in hill or in Trodoos pines forest, near stream... but Macrovipera can be find everywhere in central land or west coast near stream or little river, they like very much. Best chance is in Paphos forest to west coast. If you dont want to see wild Macrovipera, exist a man who live near Poli Crysochous: his name is Snake George (Hans-Jorg Wiedl), well known in the 96', he show me some place to find macrovipera but never seen this snake, only DOR. This man (still alive Mario?) had a sort of vivarium near the main road B7 if I remember well. You will be able to see in captivity so.
If you want to see Pseudepidalea viridis (they are really nice in cyprus) go at night near dam (barrages) on the Paphos area.
Good luck

1.use the right shoes and some additional heavy leather chaps, I know its hot even in spring but it makes you feel safe and even thorns can´t stop you
2. watch every step, don´t step at places you can´t see
3. don´t go alone
4. don´t try to catch them with a glove, most probably its not necessary to catch them at all at leastsome of them are very relaxed (until they get angy )
5. i cant imagine that you can find still green grass on cyprus in late august ?

good luck

Yves, I will be herping mainly in Northern Cyprus. In our database I found out that there is Bufo variabilis on Cyprus. I do want to see Macrovipera in stiu, but Daniel's photographs scared me that it is very easy to step on them accidentally. This guy is still active I think, likely here is his website- http://rochfordessex.net/cyprusreptiles/
