Two weeks in the beautiful Iran together with some dear herping friends. We were able to see almost all our main targets and many interesting species along the way. This trip had many, many highlights but hiking along slippery trails through the ancient Hyrcanian forest to go deep into a cave, crawl half naked through batshit trying to find Gorgan Cave Salamander (
Paradactylodon persicus) was definitely one of them. As well as standing in a stream full of Lorestan Newts (
Neurergus kaiseri) surrounded by the most stunning rock formations or hiking along hot and arid hillsides at the Iraqi border to see the Spider-tailed Horned Viper (
Pseudocerastes urarachnoides). Many dream species to see in the wild!

What an impressive array of stunning creatures.
Congrats on the spider-tailed viper, such an amazing creature - that truly is the icing on the cake. Don't suppose it was doing its tail thing when spotted?
Great report & great photos - This really deserves a 'thanks for sharing'!

Waouh ! Awesome !
I'm in love with the Neurergus (of course) but also this big lizard (Saara loricata). Your picture of Phrynocephalus mystaceus is perfect !
Have you some pictures of Iranian Flora ?
How were people ? If I'm asking it's because I'm really tempted with Iran.

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm jealous. This has to be one of the most appealling trips I've seen... Intriguing, surprising and beautifully portrayed! Thanks!

This is just amazing, and as stated else where : The word envy just does not cover the feeling, specially not after reading the full report. Great pictures, and a great story!

What a great journey! Cool snakes, nice lizards and even the manders look great, I have to admit. These cave salamanders are really big...
Thanks for sharing.
